Staff Software Engineer - Uber Direct

About the Role
Uber Direct is a new product offering that allows any type of merchant, from a local flower shop up through large enterprises like Apple and McDonald's, to offer their customers instant delivery. For example, if you were to order a Big Mac for delivery on the McDonald's app, McDonald's would then hit the Uber Direct APIs telling Uber about the delivery.
Like Uber Eats, Direct began as a small offering and has the potential to scale rapidly. By joining the team now, you'll get to be a part of that growth. This is a global product with the chance to become 20%+ of the trips that happen on Uber's Delivery platform.
What the Candidate Will Do
  • Work with engineering leadership from other areas within Uber to understand and build the platforms needed to support Uber Direct
  • In collaboration with engineering leadership, influence the roadmap for Uber Direct and supporting teams
  • Mentor other engineers on best practices development, production engineering, and communication
  • Represent Uber Direct during high-level technical discussions

Basic Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience with systems software engineering. Sound understanding of computer architecture and CS fundamentals
  • Proficient in one of the following programming languages: Java, Scala, Go, Python, C/C++
  • Detailed problem-solving approach and knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity in a constantly evolving environment.
  • Experience working closely with product managers to align technical vision with business strategy
  • Experience leading teams of engineers from across domains to execute on large projects

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and deploying high performance, highly scalable distributed systems with extensive monitoring and logging practices
  • Passion for driving continual improvement initiatives on engineering standard methodologies like coding, testing or monitoring
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents
