San Francisco, CA 94103, US

Job Description

Who we are

Twitter's core infrastructure receives hundreds of millions of tweets per day and serves tens of billions of API requests. We also serve over 2+ billion search queries per day, render millions of ad impressions, and process hundreds of terabytes of log and interaction data daily!
We dive deep into operational issues; from the software, systems, automation, and process perspectives. We understand the challenges around integrating disparate infrastructures into a new facility, processes,, and procedures. We work with open-source technologies and get involved with SRE, MySQL, Hadoop, public cloud, and databases/data platform communities. We actively participate in the vision to move away from high operational cost tasks such as break/fix, cluster migrations, new service buildouts, abuse, etc.
We’re looking for a technical and industry-experienced Engineering Manager with experience building and operating product systems to join us and manage a team of Site Reliability Engineers. As a member of our team, you will be dedicated to improving the reliability of our end-to-end data infrastructure. You will contribute to services that can shrink and expand based on demand, self heal, automatically rollout, etc.
We believe passion and personality matter; as such, we need leaders that can manage diverse, smart, and driven engineers while balancing day to day people management with moving the business forward both technically and culturally.
What you'll do
  • Mentor, grow, and empower your team by giving them the skills, confidence, and motivation to make decisions independently that lead to their personal and professional success, and enable them to become technical leaders
  • Help individuals on your team build and execute personal development plans that align with Twitter’s goals and objectives, and understand how their work fits into the bigger picture
  • Scale the team up by sourcing and hiring hardworking Site Reliability Engineers both externally and internally
  • Manage Site Reliability Engineers in Twitter offices in the US and remotely
  • Play an active role in driving and evolving the roadmap for the SRE organization
  • Drive cross-team and cross-org alignment around reliability between Product, Platform, and Infrastructure engineering teams
  • Partner with other Engineering Managers across Twitter to achieve reliability outcomes for their services
  • Participate in deep technical design discussions within your team, and across partner teams, and ensure that we're building the right systems and keeping the quality high

  • 5+ years of software support, reliability, or operations engineering experience in a customer-focused environment
  • 2+ years of experience successfully managing a team of 4-7 engineers on large-scale projects that included technical deep-dives and production troubleshooting in the areas of distributed systems, code, networking, storage, and operating systems.
  • Experience bringing a strong perspective and collaborative partnership that inspires change, and motivates engineers to develop simple solutions to complex operational or reliability challenges
  • Exposure supporting any or all of the following: relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL), Hadoop, Druid, BigQuery, and other data management services on-prem and on the public cloud.
  • Experience formulating a team's technical strategy and roadmap, and you've collaborated effectively with several other teams
  • Experience building services and systems, have successfully taken projects from inception to production, and are comfortable diving in to provide leadership for major projects when needed.
  • Comfortable leading discussions with upper management and have experience tailoring the level of technical details to suit the audience
