Role
Tesla is seeking a highly-motivated Mechanical/Electrical/Software Engineer to contribute to the continuous improvement of Manufacturing Test Equipment for the Remanufacturing team. He or she will aid in to designing, developing, and optimizing test equipment for Tesla’s Battery, Drive Unit, Charger, and Center Display lines across all of our vehicle models. Additional responsibilities include supporting with equipment debugging tasks and continuous improvement of older test and automation equipment. Roles and Responsibilities:
The Test Equipment Engineer will work to develop test equipment and software in both individual and team settings. The candidate will leverage LabView/TestStand extensively to create robust testing infrastructure for interfacing with Tesla products and reporting out results to databases. He/she will work with production team to learn production constraints on testing, and work with vehicle design teams to define optimized test specifications to balance yield and quality. Occasionally, the Test Equipment Engineer may be called to assist with the mechanical/electrical design of the tester itself, as well as to support debug/validation efforts prior to releasing the equipment to production. The Test Equipment Engineer will also be responsible for fully documenting all aspects of the projects he or she works on.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits.
  • Define most efficient plan for testing, automating and improving focusing on time/cost reduction and low complexity to promptly release new automation and test equipment.
  • Interact with various design, manufacturing, and firmware teams throughout project
  • Generate aesthetically simple GUI screens for complex test and automation machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting
  • Establish great working relationships with vendors and managing their deliverables
  • Continually design and implement improvements to released equipment
  • Industry Experience developing with NI LabView and TestStand a must
  • Exposure to a wide variety of test and automation systems, production machinery, industrial sensors, data acquisition and I/O devices (ie, pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, current and power meters, PLCs, etc)
  • Ability to draw electrical circuit diagrams (pneumatic/hydraulic diagrams a plus)
  • Must be comfortable around High Voltage systems
  • Solid understanding of software and programming best practices
  • Experience working with CAN and XNET a plus
  • Exposure to additional programming languages is a plus (Python, C#, C++, Java, etc)
  • Previous experience working with Linux a plus (Bash scripting desired)
  • Experience transitioning products and processes from prototype to production desired
  • Understanding of the interaction between software and hardware and ways to achieve it

Requirements:
  • BS or higher degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant industry experience
  • Familiarity with electronic circuits. Experience with high voltage environments is preferred but not required
  • Experience designing electrical hardware and software, with an emphasis on safety for the operator and the product
  • Solid understanding of production equipment design issues such as user friendliness, serviceability, ruggedness, noninvasive electrical test connections, etc
  • Ability to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Experience with verbal and pictorial documentation of manufacturing processes
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Understanding of Three phase electrical systems is a plus.
