The Role:
Tesla’s Cell Materials Manufacturing Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer or Vessel Design Engineer to work on a critical challenge facing the world’s energy transition – Battery Cathode materials.
As a mechanical engineer in our Cell Engineering Team, you will help lead the development and field deployment of new-to-the world chemical production processes and equipment. Your responsibilities will include designing custom equipment, piping, pressure vessels, and the machinery necessary to produce key intermediates in the battery materials value chain. You will participate in projects starting from the concept through design, fabrication, installation, and handover to operations teams.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop schematics and detailed designs for tanks, vessels, heat exchangers and other systems intended for high pressure , temperature, or otherwise harsh service.
  • Provide code-compliant, fabrication drawings to manufacturers and oversee equipment design, fabrication, procurement, installation, and acceptance testing.
  • Develop operating procedures, safety protocols, and maintenance plans for large-scale chemical process equipment.
  • Work closely with the battery materials R&D team to facilitate the introduction of novel materials and new process methods at commercial scale.

Requirements:
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or other technical disciplines and all experience levels considered
  • Design, packaging and 2D/3D CAD (Autocad, Solidworks, CATIA, etc) modeling, and simulation tools
  • Proven knowledge of industry standard codes (i.e., ASME, BPVC, ASTM, API, NBIC, etc.)
  • Software packages which may include: COMPRESS, INSPECT, AutoPipe codes, Visual Vessel Design, PVElite, DESIGNCALCS, etc.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience with the design of pressure vessels and/or other process equipment designed to operate at elevated temperatures and pressures.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability. This must include work products which illustrate a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and a demonstrated ability to solve challenging problems with minimal guidance.
  • Demonstrated experience in the execution of engineering projects from concept development through commissioning and ramp-up. This experience should include hands-on drafting experience and illustrate the ability to develop novel or otherwise custom equipment to solve unique challenges.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design including: structural analysis, equipment optimization, thermal analysis, materials of construction analysis , common failure mechanisms, corrosion etc.
  • failure mechanisms, corrosion processes and other process risks that can contribute to mechanical failure.
  • A Professional Engineers license is a plus.
  • Experience working with teams of engineers to safely reduce novel process chemistries into practice. The successful candidate will have experience using information from process flow diagrams (PFD’s) and process & instrumentation diagrams (P&ID’s) to specify and ultimately design pressure vessels and mechanical components that will safely operate under the intended use conditions.
  • Expertise conducting participating in hazard reviews (HazOps).
  • Strong knowledge of industry standard code requirements for specifying PRV set pressures and equipment design pressures.
