The Role
Reporting to the Drive Systems Manufacturing Engineering Team, the Senior Manufacturing Engineer is primarily responsible for the design and deployment of Tesla Rotor high-volume production lines. You will assume full ownership of the design and technical transfer of the line’s tools to Tesla Operations, qualifying them for use with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer works closely with Tesla’s internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, and Quality Engineering teams and coordinates cross-functional design activities with tool vendors to develop novel rotor manufacturing equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Develop manufacturing methods and specify equipment necessary to commercialize Tesla Rotors, including the following processes:
    • Automated Conveyance & Robotic part and packaging handling
    • High Pressure Die Casting and surrounding processes
    • Vision Control & Precision Gaging
    • Press & Thermal Fit assembly
    • Fastening & Torque Application
    • CNC machining
    • Automatic balancing measurement and correction
  • Define and oversee Factory Acceptance Test and Site Acceptance Test Rotor manufacturing equipment.
  • Oversee installation and ensure ramp-up of Rotor manufacturing equipment.
  • Optimize product flow and line efficiency by designing or improving tools, jigs, stations, work methods and ergonomics using the 5S methodology.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement and cost reduction programs.
  • Drive process control and process development, specifically in the areas of quality and equipment capability.
  • Work independently and with vendors to understand root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate equipment modifications.
  • Generate machine documentation and manufacturing instructions.
  • Drive other projects as needed by management or as business needs change.
  • Collaborate with the Rotor Engineering Design team to propose solutions for Tesla’s future products.

Requirements
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or 3 years experience in manufacturing engineering or similar role.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.
  • Experience working with automation systems, robotics, PLCs, and data collection systems is preferred.
  • Strong hands-on experience with high-volume and pilot manufacturing.
