The Role
Tesla’s Materials Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated engineer to work on a critical challenge facing the world’s energy transition – Battery Cathode Materials. This includes the development and scale-up of novel, high-energy and low-cost cathode materials and the development of first-of-a-kind processes that shorten the path from mine to battery cell.
As part of the team, you will lead the development and deployment of new chemical production processes and equipment, and design new processing facilities to produce high purity battery materials, leading projects from concept through design, install, integration, ramp up, and handover to the operations team.
Desired Skills/Experience:
  • Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging technical problems
  • Experience developing/designing mass production chemical processing facilities that include processes such as:
    • High purity production facilities (e.g., specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals)
    • Bulk solids handling and powder processing systems, including powder blending, powder/spray coatings, crushing/milling, mechanical sorting/sieving/separation
    • Dilute and dense phase pneumatic conveying systems, including solids/gas separation
  • Understanding of the flow behavior and characteristics of powders as they relate to reliable handling system design
  • Experience with measuring and interpreting powder flow properties as well as continuum models for hopper and feeder design
  • Experience designing/integrating/scale up of powder handling systems that include feeding, mixing, and blending of raw materials
  • Experience designing/integrating/scale up of powder handling systems to ensure reliable powder flow and minimize the potential for segregation
  • Experience designing/integrating/scale up of dilute and dense phase pneumatic conveying systems
  • Experience developing and interpreting PFDs, P&IDs, and mechanical component drawings
  • Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD packages (e.g., AutoCAD, REVIT, SolidWorks)
  • Experience and understanding of Discrete Element Modeling a plus
  • BS degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and 4+ years of industrial design experience or MS degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and 3+ years of industrial design experience

Responsibilities:
  • Develop schematic and detailed designs for first-of-a-kind chemical processing systems to produce high-purity battery materials
  • Interface with equipment suppliers through concept development, system design, detailed design, procurement, installation, and acceptance testing
  • Develop operating procedures, safety protocols, and maintenance plans for large scale chemical process equipment
  • Support operations teams with achieving productivity and material quality targets on pilot and commercial scale systems
  • Work closely with battery materials R&D team for introduction of novel materials and new process methods at commercial scale
  • Interface with multidisciplinary teams to ensure proper implementation of powder flow scientific principles
