Quality Inspection Engineer – Vehicle Engineering

April 3, 2021

Fremont, CA, US

The Role
Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering team is currently seeking a vision and sensing expert to focus on research and development for extremely difficult manufacturing quality problems.
Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering team owns the centralized technical aspects of our multi-continent Gigafactory network and product line. This includes Tesla’s most important programs, such as Cybertruck, cell production, Robotaxi’s and new factories. The quality inspection research and development team makes these systems and operations every bit as revolutionary as the products themselves.
As a Quality Inspection engineer on the Vehicle Engineering team, you will be the principal investigator on Tesla’s most challenging automated inspection systems in general assembly, paint, body-in-white, and beyond. Successful candidates will have a deep understanding on image processing and machine learning in addition to hands-on experience with cameras and industrial hardware. The ideal candidates will want to carry the product from conception all the way through project delivery and refactoring, embracing issues that inevitably arise in complex industrial and scientific environments, working closely with equipment engineers and technicians. The role will also require the confidence to flex into aspects of software engineering, as needed, to make the final product successful.
  • Invent new image processing techniques to deal with difficult quality inspection problems using a variety of sensors, then create prototypes, alpha product designs, beta releases that will be used on the manufacturing line and package the new technology into production systems rapidly.
  • Ensure that your work integrates seamlessly with existing Tesla vision and manufacturing systems with the help of software engineers and technicians
  • Work closely with equipment engineers, software engineers, and program managers to verify and validate your research
  • Help with the designs for automated quality inspections using existing technologies

  • PhD in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent industry experience
  • Deep understanding of computer vision fundamentals, such as optics, camera calibration, and digital signal processing
  • Portfolio of excellent data visualization and scientific writing
  • Demonstrated ability to get the most out of existing industrial computer vision technology, including proficiency with hardware selection for industrial applications
  • Conceptual understanding of networked computer systems
  • Openness to working with others across the spectrum in manufacturing and software engineering
  • Willingness to work in an industrial environment
  • Proficiency and basic scripting in Python
  • Nice to have: Theoretical understanding of major concepts in artificial intelligence, including convolutional neural networks, but also game theory, Markov Decision Processes, Reinforcement Learning, Nonlinear Optimization, and Linear Programming
  • Nice to have: Leadership experience in an engineering domain
