The Role
The Failure Analysis Team’s mission is to determine root cause and contributing factors to improve the experience of Tesla’s products by reducing field issues; in collaboration with large cross-section of other engineering teams. Engineers and Technicians on the team are responsible for a wide variety Energy Product systems like Powerwall, Megapack and Supercharger. This is an extremely high visibility individual contributor role that requires extensive hands-on work focused on failure analysis and root cause activities.
We are seeing a multi-faceted individual who will be responsible for all aspects of identifying, analyzing, root causing; implementing countermeasures, and reporting on issues effecting systems including power electronics, low voltage, and battery systems among others.
To be effective, the Failure Analysis Engineer will need to be intimately familiar with the detailed behavior of these electro-mechanical components and the tools and equipment used in their design and manufacture. He/She will work with other Engineering teams to quickly root cause and implement countermeasures of field issues to improve quality, reliability, durability of the products.

  • Drive issue resolution from root cause analysis to countermeasure implementation on electromechanical components from Tesla’s Energy Products.
  • Use analytical tools and techniques including electrical debug, X-Ray, microscopic inspection, cross sectioning, thermography, and functional testing.
  • Design experiments to test theories and execute with assistance of technicians.
  • Interface with engineers and supplier to drive resolution to the problems you have identified.
  • Support design reviews and DFMEAs with prior failure experience.
  • Candidate should be detail oriented, and excellent communication skills.

  • Strong demonstrable experience with electrical test equipment: Power Supplies, Multimeter, Oscilloscopes, and other common equipment.
  • Extensive experience with hand tools, basic power tools, soldering, and instrumentation.
  • Extremely proficient at reading schematics and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits.
  • Familiarity with basic failure analysis techniques including 2D and 3D X-Ray, Cross Sectioning, SEM, and FLIR Thermography.
  • Fine electronics probing and solder skills necessary.
  • Design for Reliability processes and principles: ALT, HALT, Weibull analysis, reliability prediction; FIT rates, MTTF, life data analysis, DFMEA, PFMEA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Electrical design experience a strong plus.
