The Role
The Fabrication Shop Supervisor is a member of the Kaizen Team, within the General Assembly Model 3 Equipment Maintenance Team.
He/she will be in charge of a rotating team of technicians for fabricating parts in support of the development, implementation and application of Equipment and Efficiency Improvements. The ideal candidate has a proven record of success in the fabrication of parts and fixtures or other structural members in an engineering/manufacturing environment. He/she must have a broad technical background with the ability to work with engineering, manufacturing and quality personnel across a wide variety of tasks. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are a requirement to establish effective working relationships within Tesla.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the fabrication, build and assembly of components aimed at Production Improvement
  • Welding and Fitting of Work Pieces/Assemblies, including fabrication of required fixtures needed in the process
  • Material and Tool Ordering as required
  • Conduct training on machine usage and best practices for all technicians reporting to the team
  • Provide solutions or alternative approaches to solve basic technical manufacturing problems
  • Ensure equipment is maintained properly
  • Monitor and enforce all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Interact with engineering teams to handle and execute work requests

Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 year degree or relevant experience preferred
  • 3+ years of experience working in an engineering/manufacturing environment
  • 5+ years of Supervisory experience
  • Basic knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies
  • Fluent in Creation of Shop Drawings
  • CAD design experience preferred (i.e. Catia, Solidworks)
  • Experience and demonstrated success Fabrication, Fitting and Welding of precision work pieces and assemblies with tight tolerances
  • MIG and TIG welding experience (including structural steel (>1” thick), sheet metal (steel), aluminum profile, aluminum plate)
  • Welding certification is highly preferred, but not mandatory
  • Experience in the fabrication of fixtures required for fitting and assembly of the final work piece
  • Experience and demonstrated success in the use and maintenance of shop equipment and tooling (i.e. drill press, band saw, shear, break, grinders, sanders, plasma cutter, etc.)
  • Experience in the use of measurement, inspection and scribing tools (caliper, height gage, scribe, etc.)
  • Experience in the setup of test or other structural equipment preferred
  • Familiarity with 5S or similar workplace organization methods
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines

  • Maintain flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments, coping with rapidly changing information
  • Work efficiently and productively in independent and team settings
  • Work in a team environment and assist team members, as needed
  • Communicate clearly using excellent written and verbal skills
  • Work with attention to detail while maintaining a clean and organized workspace
  • Experience with common MS office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
