Disclaimer: This position is expected to start around August or September 2021 and continue through the entire Fall term (i.e. through December/January) or into early Spring 2022 if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time, for most internships. Please consider before submitting an application.

About the team

Tesla is looking for a skilled and motivated individual to perform mechanical engineering activities for our Energy Products design team. This individual will focus on structural and dynamic analyses to drive product design and ensure safety of energy storage products that deliver innovative, best in class customer solutions and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
Engineering interns will be in an excellent position to learn as well as contribute directly to Tesla’s mission. You will receive more detailed instructions, quicker feedback and be mentored by experienced peers while executing on design tasks tailored to your personal expertise and abilities.
  • Collaborate with energy engineering teams to develop state of the art residential and industrial energy storage products
  • Modeling and design of mechanical systems and components including plastic, metal and sheet metal parts, conductors, insulators, wire-harnesses, fasteners, and other components.
  • Mechanical design simulation including thermal, structural, dynamic, optimization, and safety
  • Anticipate needed analyses and provide input throughout the design cycle
  • Perform, document, and present static, dynamic, modal, and fatigue analysis
  • Seek out and evaluate state-of-the-art analysis techniques and tools
  • Work closely with hardware and test teams to drive model correlation and improvements to product design
  • Working towards BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering (MS preferred)
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and commercial tools: Hyperworks and ANSYS preferred. Nastran and Abaqus experience heavily valued
  • Coursework in Mechanics of Materials and Finite Element Analysis
  • Strong background in solid mechanics and structural dynamics
  • Deep understanding of the material science of components used in mechanical design (metals, insulators, plastics, connectors, gaskets, conductors etc.)
  • Experience with CAD and product design
Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of GD&T and design for reliability concepts
  • Experience using CATIA v6
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Labview, and Python
  • Familiarity with battery engineering and packaging
  • Experience with designing products that receive international safety certification
  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals
