The Role:
The Electrical Controls Technician will be responsible for installing machine controls on our automation equipment. Tasks include performing electrical panel wiring, field wiring, pneumatic plumbing, troubleshooting and machine integration of industrial automated equipment.


  • Panel Construction. Build and wire panels from scratch reading electrical schematics.
  • Fabricate control enclosures for thermal management devices (i.e. Fans, Air Conditioners, Heat Exchangers)
  • Field wiring to either the panel I/O or field mount I/O devices.
  • Pneumatic plumbing.
  • Mounting electrical controls components to the machine, and fabricating mounting brackets as required.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and mount NEMA type cable trough to cleanly wire machines.
  • Understand schematic symbols in either JIC or ISO types (AutoCad Electrical or Eplan schematics).
  • Install equipment at other Tesla locations (up to 20% of the time).
  • Interface with project team (i.e. Controls Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Assemblers, Project Manager, etc.).
  • Build positive relationships coworkers and peers.
  • Perform risk mitigation (i.e. anticipate problems before they occur).
  • Troubleshoot and debug (i.e. diagnoses trouble or defects, determines corrective action and repairs system).
  • Ensure that all equipment is in proper working condition after troubleshooting.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostics on automation system and components.
  • Perform system checkout and assists in automation systems startups for service installed jobs.
  • Provide status updates to management on assigned projects.
  • Comply with the company’s safety procedures.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of Tesla.
  • Must be able and willing to travel and work at other Tesla locations.
  • This job operates in an assembly shop floor environment. Employees will also work at other Tesla locations. While performing the duties of this job, employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and loud environments.
  • This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday. When working at Tesla, hours are 7:00am – 3:30pm. Hours at other locations may vary depending on their hours of operation. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
  • Travel is expected to be up to 20% of the time. Employees must be willing to do extended travel occasionally.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile.
  • The employee is also required to interact with a computer, and communicate with peers, and co-workers.
  • This position requires the use of basic hand tools.
  • This position requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling and stooping for long lengths of time.
  • This position requires frequent lifting and moving of objects up to 50lb.

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with some college or technical school course work and minimum of two years of job-related experience, preferably in a machine-building or OEM department; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Employees must provide their own basic set of hand tools

  • Associates degree in automation or a related technical field from an accredited institution.
  • 2+ years of experience wiring automated equipment.
  • Ability to read/understand electrical schematics and create redlines.
  • High precision, close tolerance proficiency
  • Ability to use hand tools.
  • Familiarity with machine shop equipment.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills of electrical controls systems
  • Proficient in standard and metric systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
