The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated hands-on engineer for a position in the Electronics Test Engineering group, a team focused on creating robust, beautiful, data-centric production testing equipment for Tesla.
The Electrical Engineer - Inverter Testing, will be a part of operating, sustaining, and improving some of the most automated manufacturing equipment in the world. The best candidate for the position has a high aptitude to learn new skillsets in the position. The expectation is that an engineers will start with strengths in a given field (AUTOCAD, robotics, PLC Programming, vision, Python, HMI scripting, etc.) and then learn all other areas from those who work with them. This role requires capability across the board to sustain all parts of the automated equipment. The expectation is not that you arrive on day 1 with this capability, but that you have the aptitude and desire to learn all aspects of automation.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits
  • Develop PLC code to interact with conveyors, robots, LabView/Python, and 3rd party equipment which is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable
  • Research and specify electrical equipment such as various sensors, measurement equipment, I/O devices, and other hardware to meet test specification requirements
  • Generate aesthetically simple HMI screens for complex machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting
  • Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic and fluid plumbing
  • Debug and optimize automated processes to minimize cycle time and maximize uptime
  • Characterize and validate equipment using data-driven statistical approaches
  • Host and participate in design reviews for manufacturing test equipment

Requirements
  • Knowledge of Ethernet network structure and design
  • Experience with conveyor systems, and Kuka/Fanuc robots
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical (or similar) developing electrical schematics is a must
  • Experience creating technical specifications for automated equipment
  • Experience with Allen Bradley, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLC’s
  • Exposure to SolidWorks (or similar) is a plus
  • Exposure to NI LabView, NI TestStand, or Python is a plus
  • BS/MS Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent in experience)
  • 5+ years of experience as a hands-on Controls/Mechatronics/Test/Automation Engineer
