Controls Engineer, Plant Vehicle Engineering

The Plant Vehicle Engineering group works closely with manufacturing line owners in the Fremont factory to deliver new product introductions, capacity enhancements and continuous improvement projects. This team acts as the bridge between the core manufacturing engineer teams (vehicle and powertrain) and factory operations to ensure that the operational needs of the Fremont factory are met when designing and landing new equipment.
Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Controls Engineer to integrate, commission, and sustain new equipment for our cutting-edge vehicle manufacturing lines at our Fremont Factory. Through a detailed understanding of the factory objectives and extensive collaboration with internal and external teams, you will help optimize our manufacturing process. Hands-on support on the shop floor is expected as the need arises in any of the following areas: Paint Shop, Body Shop, General Assembly, or Powertrain.
  • Overall responsibility for all controls related activities in the shop, leading and assisting production in all controls related topics and issues.
  • Designing, selecting, managing, programming, and commissioning of automation equipment.
  • Development, optimization, and improvement of Human Machine Interfaces, SCADA systems, and MES interfaces.
  • Implementing and managing continuous process optimization including the addition of advanced and conventional technologies to improve quality and productivity.
  • Develop & maintain proper documentation of all electrical equipment and associated procedures, making updates as required by modifications.
  • Identify weak areas of the production systems using root cause analysis and first principles thinking, and implement effective countermeasures using all available means.
  • Implement and maintain quality control methods including pokeyokes, data tracking systems, part recognition and problem reporting.
  • Creation and improvements of equipment safety standards, and the implementation of those standards into the manufacturing equipment, including periodic checks and qualification inspections.
  • Understand and program using several different programming styles including ladder logic and structured text.

  • BS in electrical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • 3+ years of professional controls engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of professional of SCADA development experience.
  • 3+ years of advanced PLC programming knowledge on Allen Bradley, Siemens or equivalent PLCs in a professional environment.
  • HMI programming experience – AB Factory talk, Wonderware or equivalent.
  • Robotic programming skills desired.
  • Solid communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Proficient in CAD working with electrical diagrams and prints.
  • Flexibility in working weekends and night shift as required.
  • Great problem-solving skills and analytical thinking.
