The Role
Tesla is committed to hiring and developing diverse talent in all disciplines. This engineer will determine, characterize, and quantify aging mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries and collaborate with multiple teams across Tesla to optimize performance over the lifetime of the product. The candidate will be responsible for multiple, high-impact projects which will involve implementing existing techniques, developing new techniques, and analyzing data to rapidly characterize battery performance.   • Be a key member of a cross functional team to optimize lithium ion battery performance over the lifetime of the cell
  • Write test plans, propose design of experiments, and summarize findings
  • Interpret and quantify degradation modes of various battery chemistries and determine their impact on performance
  • Develop new electrochemical/chemical tests to analyze battery materials or parameters, elucidate fundamental physics leading to degradation, and improve cell modeling


  • University degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, or equivalent major
  • Good understanding of physics parameters and degradation mechanisms of batteries and battery materials
  • Familiar with chemical analysis techniques for battery materials
  • Ability to learn new concepts and methods, propose design of experiments, and execute independently
  • While not required, experience in creating multi-physics models and/or battery management systems for lithium-ion cells is a plus
