The internship assignment

To that end, Tesla’s Engineering, Design, and Procurement (EDC) Team is seeking a hardworking and passionate Building Mechanical Design Intern. In this role, you will be part of the startup team that is focused on delivering the first European Gigafactory, the newest home of Tesla’s current and future projects, products and services. The ideal candidate will thrive on working on large, complex projects, and has great communication as well as prioritization skills. Your internship assignment focuses on developing and coordinating Tesla’s design standards for construction design delivery. That includes aligning Tesla requirements with industry standards, validating material specifications, and developing Model Production Standards. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to join Tesla for an internship alongside the first employees of the European Gigafactory in Berlin, one of the most ambitious construction projects in Europe.
Learning goals & Tasks
  • Work cross-functionally to create and communicate key insights, influence key decisions and offer recommendations.
  • Identify conflicts with Architectural, Structural and other MEP design elements and present well thought-out and cost-effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with BIM and Design team to manage and maintain models and drawings that are used for planning and conceptual work.
  • Strategically and analytically evaluate the design & construction progress or obstacles and provide solutions to stay on schedule and minimize cost, impacts, etc.
  • Work closely with engineering team, construction team, contracts, manufacturing and commissioning team.
  • Communicate regularly to management and the project team with project updates such as the status of each stage, upcoming benchmark goals, potential issues, etc.
  • Support reporting on construction progress, risks, and schedule/budget exposures.
  • Work with procurement team to create biddable work packages and verify contractor bids against cost/schedule estimates.
  • Develop templates and standards for future phases/projects.

  • Studying a relevant field like Architectural, Process, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Familiarity with design and construction technologies and platforms, such as BIM (Revit and AutoCAD), and construction/project management software
  • Previous internship or work experience in designing, bidding, building, managing contracts, and closing out for HVAC systems for large industrial construction projects desired
  • Fluent in English, German is a plus
  • Willingness to spend time in the field to complete objectives
  • Ability to work within a high-performance, cross-functional organization with extremely tight timelines and ambitious goals
  • Understanding of project budgeting and scheduling
  • Self-directed with a high level of initiative and a “can do” attitude, but open to feedback and a strong desire to learn and adjust accordingly
