Your Role and Responsibilities
Do you have a passion for learning “that’s the way we’ve always done it” processes and implementing modernized replacements? Are you a curious innovator looking to lead a ready-and-able squad through DevOps transformation? If so, joining our z/OS Release Engineering and Operations team is a great opportunity for you.
Our team has already successfully been taking advantage of industry standard automation tooling in order to ensure quality, simplify processes, and introduce other opportunities to improve our z/OS product releases process. We need a DevOps engineer to lead our squad through this time of growth and to accelerate this modernization work.
Job Duties:
  • Directly serving IBM’s internal z/OS product development and test groups – hundreds of engineers across IBM z/OS operating system and middleware software engineers
  • Build, package, and install z/OS products during their cycle of development and test activities – development ‘nightly’ builds and final product release for external customers
  • Learn and perform our current release processes – mainly preparing operating system element packages, running build and install jobs, debugging job failures, and deploying the updates to test systems as they become available
  • Preparing, running, monitoring, and resolving the results of modern Jenkins pipelines
  • Collaborate with zSHIP and Nirvana technical leaders
Ongoing modernization efforts - work with your squad and sponsored users to design and deliver improvements to existing processes
  • Implement tooling for DevOps transformation – leveraging industry standard tools in a space where they have just become available in the last 3 years

As a member of the zSHIP squad, you will be expected to take ownership over release processes and operations for the elements that make up z/OS and other related products. Key qualities of this role would be collaborative and reliable with teammates, accountable for operations responsibilities, and quality-focused while innovating. The team has regular release cycle deliverables and works together to get the work done right and on-time. We are rebuilding the team with new skills and need to take our deep operational expertise and translate that into new automation pipelines for use by our squad and the development and test squads which we serve.
About the Team
The zSHIP Release Engineering squad packages, installs, and maintains each new z/OS release in multiple test environments for z/OS development and test services squads within IBM. Alongside other modernization efforts, this operational squad is developing new automation pipelines to improve our DevOps capabilities.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in automating operations which are currently manual on-platform jobs and scripts – can be a mix of back-end and DevOps background
  • Applied knowledge of industry standard technologies including Jenkins Pipelines, Git and GitHub Enterprise

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Experience in z/OS development and operations environments – TSO/E, ISPF, USS, SDSF, z/OSMF
  • Experience in z/OS package installation – SMP/E, z/OSMF
  • Experience in scripting languages - Bash shell, Python, and/or Groovy
