We are seeking a Product Engineering Senior Fuels Engineer to lead our fuel industry groups to improve U.S. and International gasoline fuel quality. In this role, you will integrate your broad technical understanding of fuel effects on vehicle performance with your detailed fuels regulation understanding to meet GM’s objectives. Lead and continue to globally grow the successful North American TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline and Diesel Fuel multi-OEM programs. ( www.toptiergas.com ) Provide OEM technical leadership for the performance standard, objective setting mentorship to the contracted program administrator, develop new TOP TIER fuel marketers, and work with GM Legal to execute Fuel Marketer license agreements. Participate-in and lead specific ASTM International and Coordinating Research Council subcommittee activities to help the fuels and automotive industries develop high quality fuel specifications and engine tests.
Substantial understanding of global fuels properties, fuel manufacturing processes, oil and additive effects, interactions with fuel system and engine component hardware, and sampling and analysis techniques to characterize fuel properties are key to achieving your goals. Identifying and facilitating new vehicle and engine dyno industry test programs to generate the vital data of fuel effects on vehicle performance to be used as the basis for future fuel specification changes are also important . Roles and Responsibilities
Additional Job Description
Significant understanding of fuels properties, standards, regulations, production processes, and their impact on powertrains and powertrain fuel systems
Represent the company at industry organizations and trade groups such as ASTM, TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, CRC, SAE, NACS, SIGMA, etc.
Direct, mentor, teach, and collaborate with GM Product Engineering technical teams as recognized fuels specialist
Analyze, diagnose, and implement changes based on fuels analytical lab test data
Support GM Public Policy on developing fuels positions on various issues to Federal, State, and Local government agencies
Develop hardware tests and interpret results to predict and simulate hardware problems
Execute functional requirements independent of Manager’s direction
Create and conduct TOP TIER training classes and presentations to Powertrain Product Teams, Chassis Teams, and Service Organizations
Demonstrate excellence in technical reports and presentations within and outside GM
BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Fuels Engineering, or related technical field
Minimum 5 years fuels chemistry, additives, or engine test development experience
Familiar with oil and additive industries, fuels properties and manufacturing processes
Experience at fuels industry trade organizations and standards setting groups – ASTM, TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, CRC, SAE, NCWM, EPA, etc.
Project management experience, including managing of multiple projects simultaneously
Expertise and/or detailed knowledge of the chemical analysis of fuels
Demonstrated understanding of Design of Experiments and Statistical Data Analysis concepts and techniques
Outstanding internal and relationship leadership skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed
International and domestic travel is required
MS or PhD level education
Previous work experience within petroleum, chemical, fuels industry, or automotive engineering
Global experience in developing, consensus gathering and implementing fuel specifications
Knowledge of calibrations, combustion, materials compatibility with respect to fuels
Peer reviewed publications in SAE or other industry recognized forums
Previous patents in fuel related projects
DFSS and Red X problem solving certification
