Job Description

Fuel Cell Lab Systems Project Engineers are responsible for preproduction product build and test equipment. Project Engineers develop requirements, design and integrate systems and sub-systems. They perform system calibration and validation testing to qualify equipment for development operations. Project engineers will manage their projects deriving SOR’s, project plans and timing as well as drawing packages. Project engineers support test equipment troubleshooting when required. Project Engineers address testing needs within General Motors and our Fuel Cell System Development/R&D teams, fostering the communication required to ensure the highest level of safety and data quality in a dynamic testing atmosphere. In this role, data analysis will be used to improve engineering operations by identifying and correcting component failures. Communications and organization skills will be key in solving problems and maximizing quality test time. A thorough understanding of fluid, electrical, mechanical, hydrodynamic, and fuel cell systems allows our team to diagnose and correct issues in a developing system, documenting operational changes to account for the new technology.

  • Manage safety as your top priority

  • Lead assigned projects from inception to validation

  • Develop project timelines and engineering packages to support assigned projects

  • Develop statement of requirements for internal and external engineering project design and support

  • Work with internal and external support teams to complete projects per requirements

  • Review and analyze test data to develop continuous improvement strategies for future upgrades and data quality

  • Provide engineering analysis used for troubleshooting system hardware and control software, including identification and resolution of test stand, test protocol, and/or test article related issues

  • Maintain area metrics and workplace organization standards

  • Lead continuous improvement activities and participate in the problem resolution process

  • Participate in cross training initiatives

  • Communicating with other engineers, resolving mechanical complications and scheduling operations

  • Constantly improving the workspace, administration, and operations environment

  • Support weekend and off-shift test needs as required for continued operations

Additional Job Description

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

  • Safety minded values that support our team and product

  • 3-5 years of testing and operation experience within an emerging technology environment or related engineering experience

  • 3-5 years experience in an equipment build and integration position

  • 1-3 years Safety Control Systems design and integration experience

  • 1-5 years working experience with any combination of the following subsystems: Hydrogen, Oxygen, High Voltage, Sub-Zero Environments

  • Working knowledge of computer controlled hardware and instrumentation

  • Working knowledge of temperature and pressure sensors, and mass flow control

  • Self-reliant problem solver with demonstrated experience exceeding expectations in an electro mechanical work environment

  • Ability to multitask in a highly flexible environment and adjust quickly to rapidly changing priorities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other engineers and work in a team environment

  • Experienced producing mechanical and electrical assembly drawings, schematics, P&ID and requirements documents


  • Mechanical Engineering Degree

  • Controls experience using dSpace, MatLab, Python, LabView, Beckhoff or Simulink software packages

  • Experience with early development product assembly and product evolution processes

  • Experience with continuous improvement and quality problem resolution processes

  • Experience with product assembly documentation and drawing structures

  • Electrical troubleshooting acumen

  • Fuel Cell Experience
