About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced engineer to help build and iterate on our internal abuse detection tools. As a peer-to-peer marketplace, we’re exposed to a wide array of types of fraud. These include collusion and merchant fraud, phishing, spam, scams, scanners & scrapers, click fraud, account takeover, bot activity, and marketplace abuse. We also work closely with the Trust & Safety, Policy, Legal and ML teams to build tools for compliance and repeat infringement detection.
On the Platform Protection team you’ll be on the front lines of attacks, and your work will require you to stay on your toes, think creatively, and be ready to respond to an ever-evolving threat. You have to have a deep curiosity about the miscreants, and a willingness to explore any means necessary to defend Etsy and its members.
More specifically, we’d like you to have SQL experience and understand how to isolate the problem to minimize false positives, do the necessary data investigation into the issue, propose a range of solutions, then execute on the best possible solution given our infrastructure, time frame, and dependencies. We rely directly on data, alerts, and metrics to drive our models and prevention strategies. We're looking for a new engineer to join the team and bring an expertise in abuse detection through real time detection systems and machine learning.
In this role you will:
Deploy code in your first week on the job
Understand current, new, and unexpected threats and attacks, and develop creative approaches to mitigating these
ABI: always be iterating on our existing fraud and abuse detection models
Genuinely care about the health and well-being of Etsy and our members, strive to protect their business from abuse with creative detection and prevention solutions
Create and ship new tools that enable Etsy to maintain its reputation as a safe and trusted marketplace
Identify and communicate best practices for risk detection development
Support and empower your colleagues around the company to seek input on new features and product launches
You’re passionate about fraud detection and data analysis, and have an understanding of the online abuse ecosystem. You have experience with streaming analytics and/ or machine learning. You're excited about Etsy’s marketplace. You’ll contribute to discovering new ways to keep Etsy safe and improve it through the use of data analytics for detection purposes.
Ideally you'll bring:
Have strong data analytics skills, and can draw meaningful conclusions and develop preventative approaches from your analysis
Have experience with various SQL databases
Have experience in threat modeling and incident response
Are familiar with Etsy, ecommerce, and online fraud
Have experience managing and deploying large and/ or complex applications
Understand that being an effective software engineer is as much about communicating with people as it is about writing code
Can write maintainable, idiomatic code in at least one language
Enjoy taking a vague question and turning it into a thorough answer
You’re excited and energized by the ever-changing nature of fraud
