Job Description
Etsy is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Precise Recommendation team which is part of the Recommendations Initiative under the product engineering organization.
This is a full-time role located in our San Francisco, CA or Brooklyn, NY offices once they reopen, and will work closely with our Director of Engineering. We also welcome applications from those working remotely across the US. The role would report to the Director of Engineering for the Recommendations initiative.
As the Manager on recommendations, you will be responsible for closely collaborating with your product partner to drive the technical roadmap of buyer-centric recommendation products at Etsy with a focus on precision and unlocking novel pathways of browsing our inventory of 90 million items.
The ideal candidate should have relevant experience in leading building ML products for recommendations and personalization at scale and incorporating them into product experiences. Candidates should have relevant machine learning background, ability to understand product needs and manage technical tradeoffs with a focus on delivery, and a desire to coach and develop their team.
About the initiative
The Recommendation initiative is a cross-functional group of product engineers, machine learning data scientists, product managers, designers, user researchers, and analysts. The initiative is responsible for creating engaging experiences maximizing state of the art machine learning across our buyer journey that help over 45 million customers discover the right items. With over 90 million items offered by 2.7 million sellers, the group brings value to our buyers, sellers, and Etsy by balancing e-commerce best practices with the exciting challenges posed by operating at scale.
About the team
Precise Recommendation team’s mission is to create novel experiences that bring recommendations and pathways to the right item to the forefront at the right time in the buying journey. We believe that a great recommendation experience is built on helping buyers find the right item with ease. Our inventory at Etsy is extensive, unique, and one of a kind - buyers are easily overwhelmed and don’t know where to go. Recommendations and pathways to recommended items have the power to solve this problem. Our work relies on developing state-of-the-art ML and capabilities to serve fresh, dynamic, and tailored recommendations based on real-time context.
About the role

  • Partner with your product manager to create a technical roadmap aligned with the product's strategy.

  • Attract, hire, and retain an amazing team of high-calibre machine learning engineers and nurture their career growth through effective coaching and mentorship.

  • Collaborate and foster positive relationships with other functions such as Product, Experimentation and Research and ML teams across the company.

  • Work with the team to create effective processes that nurture a culture of excellence and incorporate the best machine learning and engineering practices.

  • Establish and drive OKRs that clearly define the goals and success metrics for your team.


About you

  • At least 3+ years of technical experience as a data scientist or machine learning engineer solving real-world problems using large datasets.

  • 1+ year experience directly managing engineers - including providing mentorship, feedback, and investing in their career growth.

  • Expertise in machine learning and practical deep learning methods for search optimization, recommendations and learning-to-rank problems.

  • You are passionate about solving challenging machine learning problems with a relentless focus on positively impacting our buying experience.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills with attention to detail.

Minimum requirements

  • MS/PhD in Computer Science, or related field or equivalent experience.

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks namely TensorFlow and PyTorch.

  • Experience with machine learning lifecycle platforms (Kubeflow), cloud data services (GCP, AWS) and ranking systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through experience working with technical and non-technical teams.

  • Experience in leading remote teams is a plus (but not required).
