Job Description
Etsy is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the Platform Protection initiative, currently made up of 4 squads based in both the USA and Ireland. The initiative focuses on Trust and Safety Engineering to support the Etsy marketplace; this includes shutting down botnets and fraud rings, preventing account takeover, and reducing the prevalence of policy-violating content and shops on Etsy. This position serves as the Engineering lead and partner to the Trust and Safety Operations, Legal, and Security orgs.
The ideal candidate is a creative, proven leader with excellent technical, problem-solving, and communication skills. You are inspired to take on the challenges of protecting a global marketplace! You are expected to have experience working with cross-functional teams and managing multiple stakeholder partners, with the ability to influence leaders in other organizations and prioritize between different impactful projects & outcomes.

About the role:

  • You will co-create the vision of the Platform Protection initiative with your product and stakeholder partners, and drive its technical strategy.

  • You will act as a strategic lead on high-profile projects, leading large, often multi-functional company-wide projects.

  • You will co-lead OKR creation and set KPIs that clearly define the goals and success metrics for your initiative.

  • You will establish relationships with the engineering leadership team and stakeholders across the company to drive outcomes.

  • You will coach and grow engineering managers of the initiative, and cultivate a strong, values-aligned culture within the squads.

  • You will attract top talent using your network, and retain your managers and engineers through effective coaching and career growth.


  • You have a broad understanding of Trust and Safety Engineering; from building operational tools all the way to applying data science and machine learning toward automated decision making.

  • You can work independently to define and tackle unconstrained problems.

  • You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills for audiences from junior individual contributors to executives.

  • You serve as a connector between engineering and the business. You internalize your partner orgs’ strategy and KPIs and make them relevant to the eng team. You represent technical priorities during joint planning and prioritization with stakeholder leadership.

  • You're comfortable collaborating closely with engineers, managers, and other organizations at all levels.

  • You have at least 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams and engineering managers.

  • You are an excellent coach and mentor of managers and senior engineers.
